Welcome to the BAWL Website & Member Hub

We are the Bay Area Writers League (as in Galveston Bay, Texas). NASA is just down the road. We are an over thirty year old organization dedicated to helping writers of all genres and abilities enhance their skills, network with others, and succeed in following their dreams as authors. We have members who write memoirs, historical fiction, poetry, personal essays, literary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, non-fiction, romance…the list goes on.  All are welcome. You can learn more about ABOUT US.

Our goal is to join with and aid writers seeking to strengthen their skill set, either with the craft itself, or with the business of writing, or both. We welcome all writers from all walks and styles. All we ask is that you bring your desire to write, a kind heart, and a willingness to a have a good time learning and sharing with others as careers blossom and grow. We enjoy spending time with other writers who like to work together, to make good things happen.

Members have In-Person Monthly Meetings - These meetings are back and happening the last Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm at the Friendswood Library hosted by Kate Sanger. See Events for details of each meeting and to RSVP. Guest Speaker bios are in News

Elections Results: Kate Sanger was elected as BAWL President. Becky Ellisor is our Treasurer.

Write-Ins   Our write-ins occur every Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, hosted by Martha Cuddihy via Zoom and once-per-month on the third Saturday at 3:00 pm for two hours hosted by Julie Pitzel. The Saturday afternoon write-in is both in-person and via Zoom. Go to the events page to RSVP and get the Zoom information.

Our method instills a sense of commitment to writing, providing a gentle push to get started. We value camaraderie and foster a welcoming environment where participants are not obligated to share their work. While there are no strict rules, we avoid political discussions to maintain a friendly ambiance.

Critique Group BAWL has an in-person Critique Group where writers gather regularly to examine and discuss each other’s work. Kate Sanger and Kim Glaus Late host these twice-per-month sessions. Sign-up via the Events page.

After attending three write-in or critique group events, we require membership in the Houston Bay Area Writers League. It's only $30 a year. (We can help if you need it.  Just ask.) Everyone is a volunteer. Membership fees go to pay guest speakers, cover all website expenses including all the membership management and financial transactions features, and more.

Anthology Update:  It's On! See the event landing page and rules page for all the details. Please consider volunteering to help this project deliver on time.

We are located in southeast Texas on the Gulf of Mexico which encompasses the Galveston Bay.

Out of region writers are welcome to join us and participate in the online events, such as the write-ins. We are in central US timezone.
