We are the Bay Area Writers League (as in Galveston Bay, Texas). NASA is just down the road. We are a forty-year-old organization dedicated to helping writers of all genres and abilities enhance their skills, networking, and succeed in pursuing their dreams as authors. We have members who write memoirs, historical fiction, poetry, personal essays, literary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, non-fiction, romance…the list goes on. All are welcome. You can learn more ABOUT US.
Our goal is to join with and aid writers seeking to strengthen their skill set, either with the craft itself, or with the business of writing, or both. We welcome all writers from all walks and styles. All we ask is that you bring your desire to write, a kind heart, and a willingness to a have a good time learning and sharing with others as careers blossom and grow. We enjoy spending time with other writers who like to work together, to make good things happen.

2026 Elections: May 27 Meeting:
Unfortunately, Kate Sanger (our President) is unable to continue in her role. If you're interested in taking on any role - including President - please reach out. We'd love to see new volunteers!
In-Person Monthly Meetings - The meetings are currently on hold. If you're interested in volunteering to help make them happen again, please email or go to our Facebook page.
Write-Ins: 3rd Saturday of every month at Friendswood Library in the Rotary Room from 3 to 4 pm. Online and in person hosted by Julie Pitzel. Contact Julie via the BAWL Facebook group.
Our method instills a sense of commitment to writing, providing a gentle push to get started. We value camaraderie and foster a welcoming environment where participants are not obligated to share their work. While there are no strict rules, we avoid political discussions to maintain a friendly ambiance.
Critique Group - BAWL has an in-person Critique Group where writers gather regularly to examine and discuss each other’s work. Kate Sanger hosts these twice-per-month sessions, the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Panera Bread on El Dorado Blvd from 6 to 7:30 pm. Check out the Facebook page for updates.
After attending three write-in or critique group events, we require membership in the Houston Bay Area Writers League. It's only $30 a year. (We can help if you need it. Just ask.) Everyone is a volunteer. Membership fees go to pay guest speakers and cover all website expenses including all the membership management and financial transactions features, and more.

We are located in southeast Texas on the Gulf of Mexico which encompasses the Galveston Bay.
Out of region writers are welcome to join us and participate in the online events, such as the write-ins. We are in the Central US timezone.
If you write and you need a welcoming, encouraging group - consider the Bay Area Writers' League.
