BAWL & Friends Newsletter

June 2025 Edition

Hello, Writers,

The theme for the 2025 BAWL Anthology has been selected and it is: FLYING. You can read the rules for submitting your pieces on the website. We hope all of you will submit something this year. Deadlines are firm so that we can have a finished product by the end of the year in time for the gift-giving season.

The speaker for the in-person meeting this month will be: Matthew Riley

Matt Riley has been the director of the Friendswood Library since August 2018.

Matthew Riley is a poet and library director. His poems appear in numerous anthologies and journals. He has been invited to read at poetry festivals, bookstores, libraries, galleries, cultural centers, and online forums. He hosts Friendswood Poets and enjoyed three years on the board of Mutabilis Press, a non-profit literary press devoted to publishing poetry. He is the author of Late Blooms for Laughing Ghosts, out now at Point Clear Press, and is working on a second collection of ekphrastic poems based on the paintings of Edward Hopper. RSVP for the in-person meeting featuring Mr. Riley.

There will be no Write-in or Critique Group meetings on July 2nd due to the Independence Day.

The Monday and Wednesday morning write-ins are now being hosted by Martha Cuddihy. Thank you to Martha for volunteering to take this on. Sign up via Events. Each week the morning write-ins are at the same time, same Zoom, and all are welcome to join. For the Saturday write-in, check our Facebook (see button below) for details from Julie Pitzel.

Some good news about Dian Groh. Her poem Kandinsky Contrast was accepted into the 2025 Friendswood Library Ekphrastic Poetry Anthology and Reading. We'll keep you updated about this Anthology via our NEWS page

Dian, also forwarded some interesting information she received regarding opportunities for writers to submit their pieces. This prompted me to create a new page on our website. Visit the Opportunities for Writers page, located under Resources. If you become aware of opportunities you'd like to share, send them to editorbawl@gmail.com for inclusion on the page.

The feature this month is an essay by Kate Sanger, titled: "If eyes are the window to the soul... What are parking lots?" Many thanks to Kate for sharing. If you are interested in submitting a feature for July, please send the final draft to editorbawl@gmail.com by Jule 7th, 2025.

Happy Writing!

- Kelley

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE THE MONTH:

"I don't think there's really any difference between art - or writing, or music - and magic. And I particularly draw the link between magic and writing. I think that they are profoundly connected."  - Alan Moore
